Claude Haiku 5.5: fast responses, adjustable effort and new tools for agents
Competition between AI models also depends on small tasks repeated millions of times. Anthropic introduced Claude Haiku 5.5 on October 7. The model targets fast responses, classification, queries and support for larger agents. This October 11 review covers a launch earlier in the week, not an announcement made today.

Adjustable effort and tools for agents
This is the first Haiku-family model with an adjustable reasoning-effort setting. Anthropic describes it as a way to balance capability and cost. The announcement also adds beta computer-use and browser-use support to its Python and TypeScript libraries and positions Haiku as an assistant to Opus and Sonnet on coding work.
That does not mean any agent can do every job. The provider still places more complex coding tasks with its larger models. Summarizing a file, identifying its topic and resolving an ambiguous decision are different workloads.
Availability and API prices
The official model page lists availability in Claude, Claude Code, the Claude Platform and partner cloud services. API pricing separates prompts up to 100,000 tokens from those above that threshold. Listed prices per million tokens are USD 0.10 for input and USD 0.50 for output in the first tier; the second lists USD 0.50 and USD 2.50. These are provider prices reviewed on October 11, not a purchase by SagaTVEC.
Availability in an application does not make its API free or unlimited. Cache and batch-processing discounts also depend on their applicable conditions.
How to read performance claims
Anthropic reports improvements over Haiku 4.5 in coding, tools and agents. Manufacturer evaluations do not establish superiority on every task or reliability with a particular company’s data.
Editorial analysis: meaningful testing compares errors, time and cost on the same tasks. In a newsroom, classifying a story accurately matters more than responding quickly: a fast classification error could put a rumor on the front page. Browser tools expand what an agent can attempt, while authorization and review remain necessary.
